class EcoSpecies¶

Bases: TypedReferenceCount

What an Ecosystem needs to know about a plant species: its size and life, how it takes shade, which ground it wants, and how it spreads. Plain values (metres, years, degrees); no geometry – the name is what a renderer maps to its tree species.

max_height: the height (m) a tree reaches on an ideal site crown_ratio: crown radius over height growth_rate: the fraction of its remaining height it gains a year at full vigour max_age: the age (years) by which senescence has it maturity_age: the age (years) it starts to seed at shade_tolerance: 0 needs full sun (pioneers) .. 1 thrives in deep shade moisture_pref: the moisture (0 dry .. 1 wet) it does best at moisture_width: how far from that it still does well (a Gaussian’s sigma) slope_max: the steepest ground (degrees) it establishes on altitude_min: the lowest altitude (m, EcoTerrain::get_altitude()) it establishes at altitude_max: the highest altitude (m) it establishes at seed_radius: how far (m) its seeds fall (at most the engine’s reach) seed_rate: seedlings a healthy mature plant sends out per year (before germination) density: seed rain from outside: establishments per hectare per year on a good site crown_opacity: how much light its crown stops (0..1) patchiness: 0 even seed rain .. 1 strongly patchy (species stands) patch_scale: the size (m) of those patches understory: a shrub-layer plant (under the trees’ crowns, beside a tree in the same cell); by default anything under 5 m tall

A NaN (or, but for the altitude limits, an infinite) value is rejected with an error, the setting unchanged.

EcoSpecies.light_response()¶: Vigour 0..1 from the light reaching the plant (0..1 of open sky): a species needs 0.1 (shade tolerant) .. 0.7 (pioneer) of full light to grow at its best; below that its vigour falls as (light / need) to a power from 0.65 (tolerant: a sapling in deep shade still grows, slowly) to 2 (a pioneer starves).
